NRA Engages Tax Consultants

In order to ensure tax compliance

The Domestic Tax Department (DTD) led by the Deputy Commissioner, Edwin Conteh, held a strategic  meeting with Tax Consultants. The purpose of the meeting was to encourage Tax Consultants to ensure their clients comply with their tax obligations especially the Filing of the final Income Tax.

The Deputy Commissioner also reminds the consultants that the filing of final income tax returns, culminating in payment of Fifth instalments is due on or before end of April, for majority of business institutions.

The DTD Commissioner, James Bobor Tengbeh, acknowledged the importance of tax consultants to the Authority. He stated that the meeting geared towards re-echoing to the consultants to help the Authority reach out to their clients in a bid to comply with their tax obligations. He further reminded them of the penalties imposed by law, but said that the Authority prioritizes compliance rather than imposing penalties.

The consultants were also encouraged to comply with their tax obligations as the Authority is on an enforcement drive.

The Commissioner in his final statement stressed the importance of filing returns before the deadline and if the taxpayers are facing any challenge, they should reach out to the Authority. The Authority will not entertain appeal to waive penalties, says the DTD Commissioner.

The tax consultants, acting as intermediaries, acknowledged these issues and provided insights into the difficulties faced by their clients, ranging from lack of awareness to technical challenges with the online filing system. These challenges were addressed by the DTD team and further commitments were made to constantly act on the challenges faced by taxpayers.
